(August 25, 1912-December 28, 1984) Born Peter Frederick Kihss in Brooklyn, New York; educated at Columbia. Began a long career in journalism soon after college, working for the Associated Press in Washington, as a part-time reporter for New York Times in Argentina and Uruguay (1933), for Washington Post (1934-36), World-Telegram (1936-43), Herald-Tribune (1943-51), and New York Times (1952-82). Reported for Times on enrollment of Autherine Lucy at University of Alabama and other school desegregation stories; nominated four times for Pulitzer Prize. Active in New York Newspaper Guild. Died at home of a heart attack in Jamaica Estates, New York.
