Born Clifford Wesley MacKay in Des Moines, Iowa. Educated at East High School in Des Moines and Drake University, from which he received a bachelor's degree in journalism. Began career as copy editor for Des Moines Register; worked as managing editor for Iowa Bystander (1928-29); reporter and theater editor, Chicago Defender; news editor, Journal and Guide (Norfolk, Virginia), and managing editor, Atlanta Daily World (early 1940s). Studied at American Press Institute, Columbia University, in 1946. Joined staff of Baltimore Afro-American in the early 1940s as managing editor; retired as editor-in-chief in 1968. Died in Baltimore.
