(October 8, 1913-June 20, 1977) Born James Rorex Stokely Jr. in Newport, Tennessee; educated at University of Tennessee (B.S., 1934) and Princeton. Married Wilma Dykeman in 1940; author, with Dykeman, of Neither Black nor White (1957), Seeds of Southern Change (1962), Highland Homeland: The People of the Great Smokies (1978), and many magazine articles. Owned and managed Stokely Apple Orchard in Newport and in Asheville, North Carolina (1940-53; 1944-53). Died in Newport.
