(October 3, 1928- ) Born Richard Brockway Stolley in Peoria, Illinois. While in high school, worked as sports editor for Pekin, Illinois Daily Times (1944-46). Served in U.S. Navy (1946-48); studied journalism at Northwestern (B.S., 1952; M.A., 1953). After short stint in 1953 as reporter for Chicago Sun-Times, joined staff of Life magazine, working as Atlanta bureau chief (1956-60), Los Angeles bureau chief (1961-64), Washington bureau chief (1964-68), senior editor based in Europe (1968-70), assistant managing editor (1971-73), and later managing editor of Life monthly (1982-86). Founded and served as managing editor of People magazine (1974-82); was director of special projects for Time, Inc. (1987-89), editorial director of Time, Inc. (1989-93), and executive producer of TV show Extra (1995-96). Currently senior editorial adviser for Time Warner (1993- ); lives in New York City.
