In response to a wave of violence against African-Americans in the South, Truman appoints presidential committee on civil rights on December 5.

April: Ebony magazine publishes profile of six "Negro Newsmen on White Dailies": Earl Brown of Life, Edgar T. Rouzeau of the New York Herald-Tribune, Ted Poston of the New York Post, William A. Brower of the Toledo Blade, George Moore of the Cleveland Press, and Hiram Jackson of the Illinois State Journal and Register. The print media in the United States are almost completely segregated; only a handful of African-Americans are employed as journalists by "white" newspapers.
