Johnson announces on March 31 that he will not seek reelection.

King is assassinated in Memphis on April 4. Rioting in Washington, Chicago, Baltimore, Kansas City, and other cities, April 5ý9, results in 46 deaths.

Congress passes civil rights bill prohibiting racial discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing, April 10, and Johnson signs it on April 11.

The Rev. Ralph Abernathy succeeds King as president of the SCLC and leads Poor People's March to Washington, where protestors build "Resurrection City," a plywood shantytown near the Washington Monument, on May 12.

Senator Robert Kennedy is assassinated in Los Angeles on June 5 while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Resurrection City" is closed by police on June 24.

Richard M. Nixon wins presidential election on November 5.
